What is the History of Shiatsu?
Shiatsu has been recognized as a medical therapy only since the early part of the 20th century, a veritable infant compared to acupuncture and herbal medicine which have been in continuous use for more than two thousand years.
Shiatsu is born from Anma Acupuncture first came to Japan around 1000 years ago. At that time in Japan, a manual therapy known as Anma was already in use. It comprised various diagnostic methods to arrive at treatments and utilized the systems of Oriental Medicine which include the principles of yin and yang and the five elements. Anma was widely used and held in high regard by the medical establishment. Shiatsu combines an increased understanding of human anatomy, psychology, and Oriental Medicine. It relies heavily of the laws of nature (yin and yang and the five elements).
