Why Movement Heals
There is a pervasive concept out there... that our body is perfectly capable of taking care of itself with little, or no, help from it’s owner. There is a big difference between going to our doctor for an annual check-up and the daily preventative measures that we can take to help keep our bodies healthy and functioning in an optimal way.
Do you want to just "Manage your Health" or take an "Active Role in Prevention"?
I'll outline the systems within the body that are primarily responsible for maintenance. And, I'll show that these systems, need us, actually, require us, to help operate them. The focus is primarily on the fluid matrix of the body, the blood & lymph, and the vital role they play in the care of our bodies.
And... it all comes down to physically moving our bodies.
Never, Ignore Pain
Pain...how many of us have ignored this signal, only to be humbled by our body when it decides to stop us cold? I learned this the hard way, even though I have been telling my clients for years, “Never, ever, ignore pain.” Your body is wise, and, it will give you plenty of warning before something major happens.
Pain, is our bodies most effective way to get our attention. Understanding this, is the first step. Learning what to do about it, is the next step. I will help you begin to understand your bodies language, and how to give it what it needs in order to help it move toward a state of health and balance.
Your body is communicating with you on a daily basis, are you listening?
The Relationship Between Earth & Man
The same forces that make the Earth sick, make us sick and the same forces that make the Earth healthy, make us healthy. I will show that the relationships between the earth and man correspond directly to our organ systems. For instance, the earth has digestive organ system, respiratory organ system, and circulatory organ systems etc. I will also bring into play the perspective of these relationship from the viewpoint of Oriental Medicine and its laws, namely the laws of the Five Elements and the Four laws of the Yin & Yang relationships. This is fundamental in showing that we are utterly dependent on a healthy earth and we are dependent on the variety of species that live in and on it. Destroying any one part of the whole, ultimately paves the road for our own destruction.
Exercise to Thrive, not just Survive
We all know that exercise is good for us, but can exercise do harm? What is the right kind of exercise? & How much is too much?
These are questions clients ask me every day. It can be confusing to know what is best. I’ll help you get a better sense of what constitutes good exercise for you, and to recognize when exercise is destructive, rather than constructive. I will outline safe and highly effective methods of strength training and cardiovascular exercise. And most importantly, emphasizing the vital role that rest, recovery, stretching & sleep play in the process of “Thriving”.
Non-nourishment & Our Emotions
(The Effect of Nutritional Deficiencies on Our Species from the Perspective of the Five Element Theory in Chinese Medicine) The course our health takes in life, is influenced by emotions. We know that to experience chronic stress in life, our body will eventually manifest distress in a physical form. What is stress, but the chronic expression of worry, fear, anger, rage and grief. This is what triggers the physiological responses that cause the conditions of heart disease, arteriosclerosis, ulcers, IBS Stress related conditions, etc. So emotions carry a lot of weight in the body and anger is one of the biggies. In Chinese Medicine, anger is directly associated with the Liver and it is the Liver’s associated patterns (diagnostic term for defining treatment plans) that out-number all other organ patterns in the body.
I will show that it is, indeed, our lack of nourishment, that leads to the strong imbalance of the emotion anger. And, that this emotion is expressed on a continuum that ranges from, Anger & Rage to Apathy & Depression. I will outline the connection to the prevalence of this emotion with the undernourishment that is pervasive in our culture today, due to our degraded food system and depleted soils.
Stress: the Good, the Bad & the Ugly
How can something that has no substance do so much physical harm to our bodies? I’ll explain how and why the physical damage from stress happens, and that this damage is progressive, ultimately leading to bigger, uglier problems down the road.
I’ll help you recognize the symptoms of stress and understand that you do not have to be a victim of its effects. Being healthy, is not about eliminating stress from your lives, rather, it is about arming you with the tools that you need to reduce the damaging impact on your body.
Long-Life, Practices
In the long-run, it is our practices that we put in place on a regular basis that make a difference in our health, not the things we do every once in a while. We all know that the practice of exercise is vital for our health, but are there other practices that we can put in place that will help our bodies to function better?
I will discuss a variety of practices coming from different cultures that anyone can use to assist their body toward health. Practices such as meridian taping, acupressure, stretching, chanting, meditation, neti pot (nasal douche), breathwork, enema, dry skin brushing, and sauna, will be discussed. These are called Long-Life Practices because they improve the functioning of vital organs and systems of the body. There is much that we can do for ourselves, to maintain a balanced, healthy body.
